Hi Berger and/or Tibono,

since both of you seem to have these machines, I have a question:

Does the Presto/Octo have one of the following features?
1) a kind of 'New game' (or do you really always have to switch it OFF and ON again for a new game?)
2) a 'Monitor mode' (just checking the moves for both sides)
3) a kind of 'Clear board' when setting up a position

Since I don't have an original manual for these machines, I didn't find any of these functions -
maybe they can only be accessed by some key combinations?

On/Off switch for 'new game'

CBF escribió:2) a 'Monitor mode' (just checking the moves for both sides)

It has not 'Monitor mode'

CBF escribió:3) a kind of 'Clear board' when setting up a position

Yes...
The method explained in the manual in order to "clearing the entire board" is:
1) Press SET UP
2) Remove the pieces one by one by pressing each piece down gently
:D

I'll scan the manual before midnight, and I'll write the link here.

Well, a rather brutal method. ;)
It has not 'Monitor mode'

Unfortunately - this is the first mode I use when I'm implementing a new module, because it's the fastest way
to execute enpassant or pawn promotions and to see how the engine handles these moves.
For the Presto I've automated these special moves, because it doesn't accept any further actions like pressing
the captured enpassant pawn or entering a promotion piece (which is always a queen).
Yes...

1) Press SET UP
2) Remove the pieces one by one by pressing each piece down gently
:D

Again a very 'comfortable' method - but who would really want to solve chess problems with these machines? :D

So it seems I've indeed covered all existing features of these machines in CB-Emu.

Thanks,

Test done, indeed the 12Mhz emulation is slightly but noticeably slower than the Octo-15. The gap increases with the response time.
Later I will measure it with a chronometer and provide accurate results.
By the way, I noticed during my Octo thinking time, the Black/White led stays lit up (green while computer thinks as black player, red elseway). With the emulator, the leds are off; and lit on (according to the computer side color) once the move is displayed.
After playing the computer move, both emulator and Octo behave the same (player's led is on).

In my opinion no further testing is necessary. It seems clear that your Octo really works at 15MHz, while mine works at 12MHz. Thank you, I'm going to transfer this information to schachcomputer.info-Wiki

You're right. In CB-Emu the behavior of the "side-color" (green/red) LEDs is different from that of the physical computer.

Here we have the manual in PDF: Novag Octo

But this time it's definitely not my fault - I've just checked the original driver and it has the same behaviour. ;)
I'll have a look at the code, maybe I can find a solution for it.

Ok, I've solved this LED problem while the computer is thinking.
But it's again just a hack, so should I post this new version, or should we wait until 'hap' finds a more direct solution?

I think it's better to wait a little, because this behavior also happens with MAME v0.185 but I don't think 'hap' can do something about it until tonight ...
